Keeping the spirit of the Blood Bank Society, Chandigarh soaring in the Golden Jubilee year (1964 – 2014), the Society has a gamut of events planned. CHANDIGARH CYCLING has joined hand to work for a noble cause of Voluntary Blood Donation.
A Cycle Rally was organised to create awareness about Blood
Donation and Thalassemia Eradication on the 19th April in collaboration with
the Chandigarh Amateur Cycling Association. Over 300 participants from local
schools, colleges, University, PGI and blood donors took part in the vent with
lot of enthusiasm. The students and blood donors come with catchy slogans
displayed on the placard to make the event very colourful and motivate people
to donate blood to save precious lives.
Cycle Rally was flagged off from the PGI by Dr. Anil Kumar
Gupta, Medical Superintendent, PGIMER with a band of Medical consultants who
come over to interact with the participants specially the budding kids. Sh. Randhir Singh Saroha, Vice
President, Chandigarh Cycling and OSD to Chief Minister Haryana joined the
Blood Bank Cycle Rally with more than 300 cyclists and rode the bike along with
many dignitaries of Blood Bank Society, which covered a distance of 14 Km upto
Sukhna Lake and culminated at Gandhi Bhawan Panjab University,
where refreshments, a commemorative T-Shirt and a participation
certificate were presented to each participants.
Sensitizing the youth about Blood Donation and the need to get
tested for Thalassemia is very essential both for the Society and for
protecting families from the dreaded disorder, Thalassemia, which can be
prevented by knowing your status regarding being a “carrier” of the disease.
It is determined by just one blood test!
While “carriers” themselves are healthy people, 2 “carriers” can
produce a child with the full-blown disease. This means blood transfusion
for the rest of the child’s life to keep it alive, as this disorder, prevents
the production of adequate blood cells in the child’s body.
Being aware can save a lifetime of misery for the child as well
as the family.
